Which courts operate regularly in the building?
Civil and probate jurisdictions. Some criminal matters are heard in the Supreme Court Building, but most are heard in the Sir Samuel Way Building. When the High Court is in Adelaide, it operates from the Supreme Court Building.

What facilities/services are available for people with disabilities?
Entrance to the building is accessible via the Library Building from Gouger Street

Accessible toilets are located on the ground level at the entrance of the Library Building/Court 12 and at ground level at the entrance off King William Street

Accessible water fountain located on the ground level between Court 11 and 3

The Civil and Probate Registry offers conference room facilities which are located adjacent to its public counter for registry clients who may find the public counter too high to use. Please contact the Supreme Court Registry (8204 0496 or email supreme.registry@courts.sa.gov.au) to reserve the use of the conference room prior to attending.

Many of the courtrooms are not accessible in the original building as it is quite old and heritage listed.  However, some courtrooms in the newer building are accessible for people in wheelchairs. If you are a party to an action please notify the Supreme Court Registry (8204 0496 or email supreme.registry@courts.sa.gov.au) before you attend and the registry will to make the appropriate arrangements.

Closest accessible car parking is in the Central Market Car Park, Victoria Square or Mill Street Car Park (off Gouger Street)

Where do I go to find out about my case?
If your case is to be heard on that day check the daily case list at the main entrance or enquire at the registry counter.

What other services operate from the building?
The Supreme Court Library provides a law library service to the judiciary, the legal profession and the public. The library is located on Level 2 of the Library Building at 1 Gouger Street, Adelaide. Enter through the courtyard on Gouger Street (between the Supreme Court building and the Jeffcott Chambers). The library is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm.

Where should I go before my hearing?
After you have checked the case list, go to the courtroom and report to the court staff in that courtroom (if you are not legally represented) before your case is due to be heard.

How long before the hearing should I arrive?
If you do not have a lawyer, you should report to the court staff in the nominated courtroom at least five minutes prior to the commencement time of when the matter is to be heard.

If you do have a lawyer, you should arrive at the time arranged with your lawyer.

Is there a private room I can use to speak to my lawyer?
Yes. There are interview rooms situated on Level 5 of the Library Building and adjacent to Courts 2 and 11 in the Supreme Court Building.

Where is the nearest public phone?
A blue public coin-operated phone is located on Level 4 of the Library Building.
A gold public coin-operated phone is located at the entrance of the Civil and Probate Registry.

Can I bring my mobile phone into court?
Mobile phones and pagers must be turned off while in the courtroom. You may use mobile phones and pagers in other public areas of the building.

Where are public toilets located in the courthouse?
Public Toilets are located on the Ground Floor of the entrance to the Library Building and off King William Street.

Are there vending machines in the building?
A vending machine selling soft drinks can be found at the entrance of the Supreme Court Civil and Probate Registry.

Are there cafes nearby?
There are a number of cafes and restaurants on Gouger Street and in the Central Market complex.

Where is the nearest public transport?

Tram

The City to Glenelg Tram Station is located in the centre of Victoria Square. A free tram runs from Victoria Square to North Terrace.

Train
The Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace is a 15-minute walk from the courthouse, or five minutes on the tram.

Is there carparking near the building?
Limited on-street parking is available on Gouger Street, however, parking is for up to three hours only. Undercover parking stations are located between Gouger and Grote Streets and Gouger and Wright Streets.

Where is the nearest taxi rank?
There is a taxi rank in front of the Sir Samuel Way Building, on the south west corner of Victoria Square.

What security procedures are in place in the building?
Uniformed Sheriff’s Officers maintain security in the building, as well as acting as court orderlies. All Sheriff’s Officers are trained to provide a safe environment for everyone in the building.

Everyone who enters the building walks through an airport style metal detector. Any belongings you bring into the courthouse must be x-rayed on your entrance. You may also be scanned with a hand-held metal detector. Nothing that could be used in an offensive manner is allowed into the building. This includes things like pocket knives. If in doubt, ask a Sheriff’s officer.

How can I get an interpreter?
An interpreter can be booked through the court registry officer at least ten working days before your case is heard. You will need to advise the court registry officer the court action number and the language and dialect that you require.
