PORT LINCOLN RESIDENTS TO GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT NEW COURT

Port Lincoln residents will be given a rare chance to see behind the scenes at the city’s new courthouse when an open day is held on Thursday, June 28.

The doors will be open to everyone from 2 pm to 5.30 pm.

The two courtrooms, conference room and registry area will be open to the public and staff will be on hand to answer questions.

A Magistrate will conduct a number of mock court scenarios with local schoolchildren.

There will be information stands and displays from a number of justice-related and community groups.

The new courthouse, a joint venture between private enterprise and government, began operations last November and

last year, the court handled 1672 criminal matters and 270 civil actions.

Magistrates from Adelaide travel to Port Lincoln once a month and sit for a week at a time. The Youth Court and associated Family Conference Team regularly travel to Port Lincoln to hear cases involving people up to 18 years.

Others to use the court facilities include the Industrial Court, Federal Court and the Residential Tenancies Tribunal.
