RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT COURTS
More
than 2000 people are expected to get a rare behind the scenes look at South
Australia’s courts when the courts hold their open day at the Sir Samuel Way
complex in Victoria Square on Saturday, May 10.
Court
staff will take visitors on a tour of the basement holding cells and then show
them how prisoners are taken from their cells to a courtroom via a secure lift.
Staff
will then explain what happens inside a typical criminal courtroom and then show
them a jury deliberation room.
Children
will be well catered for with the opportunity to have souvenir posters made
showing them in a Judge’s wig and gown.
Forensic
Frenzy, a CSIRO Education Unit display with a hands-on laboratory for budding
forensic scientists, was a big attraction last year and again will be a major
drawcard.
A
display of fingerprinting techniques will also be a major attraction for
visitors.
Two
mock trials (lasting about an hour) will be held in Court 8, the first beginning
at 10.15 am and the second at 2 pm, with the opportunity to ask questions of a
District Court Judge at the end of the trial. A mock sentencing will also be
held between 1 pm and 1.45 pm.
There
will also be historical displays and information stands are being provided by a
number of organizations including Victim Support Services, The DPP, Legal
Services Commission, the Coroner’s Court and court reporting services.
Doors
to the Sir Samuel Way open to the public at 10 am and close at 3.30 pm.
The
open day is the first event of Law
Week which is being held between May 11 and 18.
