STATEMENT FROM THE HONOURABLE JOHN DOYLE AC
CHIEF JUSTICE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The Chief Justice has today issued this statement:
“Justice Layton has asked his Excellency the Governor to accept her resignation as a Judge of this Court with effect from Friday, 3 September 2010. I forwarded her letter of resignation to the Attorney-General on 4 June 2010.
The judge wishes to pursue her international career in the field of judicial education and professional development both locally and internationally.
Justice Layton has had a substantial involvement at international level for some time, including as Chair of the Committee of Experts on application of Conventions and Recommendations with the International Labour Organisation, in Geneva.
She has also been conducting workshops and seminars on labour and human rights standards for judges, lawyers and practitioners in various countries, since 1999, as well as similar activities on child protection and social justice issues at a local level.
I am confident that Justice Layton will make a substantial contribution to the judiciary through her work in the field of educational and professional development. I thank Justice Layton for her work in the Supreme Court and I am joined by the other Judges of this Court in wishing her well.”
Justice Layton was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court on 2 March 2005.
