Today a ceremony was held to mark the opening of the Nunga Court in the Port Lincoln Magistrates Court.
It is the first new Nunga Court constituted since the Court was enshrined in law, which came into effect on 1 March 2023.
There was significant support for a Nunga Court at Port Lincoln during community consultation by the Magistrates Court with stakeholders including local service providers, local Aboriginal Elders and Respected Persons, government and non-government organisations and the legal profession.
Elders and Respected Persons from the local community will sit on the Port Lincoln Nunga Court, which convene approximately nine times per year.
At the official opening, Magistrate Brett Dixon said that this court is an example of how the Courts are responding to community needs.
The Nunga Court already sits at Port Adelaide, Murray Bridge, Maitland and Yalata, and Aboriginal Community Courts also sit at Adelaide and Elizabeth.
