All judges hear civil and criminal matters in Adelaide and at circuit locations

Judges are involved in performance management of judicial support staff and contribute to the development of these staff by providing feedback on performance and skills development needs. One judge also assists in overseeing associates in their role of providing legal research and other services to the judges.

The ERD Court is a specialist court. ERD Commissioners are not lawyers, they are however, appointed for their specialist qualifications and expertise in areas relevant to the court’s jurisdiction. For example, the permanent Commissioners are all qualified town planners or architects and the part time Commissioners have expertise in areas including town planning, architecture, engineering, irrigation, water resources and native vegetation. The Chief Magistrate is the principal judicial officer of the Magistrates Court. South Australian Magistrates are based in Adelaide, in metropolitan courts at Christies Beach, Elizabeth and Port Adelaide, and in regional courts at Berri, Mount Gambier and Port Augusta. Other regional cities and country areas are serviced by magistrates on circuit from courts in Adelaide, the suburbs and regional areas.
