Our judiciary

The Chief Judge is the principal judicial officer and is responsible for its administration. District Court Judges preside over all divisions of the Court. Associate Judges conduct hearings in the Civil, Criminal Injuries and Administrative and Disciplinary Divisions.

All judges hear civil and criminal matters in Adelaide and at circuit locations

Judges are involved in performance management of judicial support staff and contribute to the development of these staff by providing feedback on performance and skills development needs. One judge also assists in overseeing associates in their role of providing legal research and other services to the judges.

The ERD Court is a specialist court. ERD Commissioners are appointed for their specialist qualifications and expertise in areas relevant to the court’s jurisdiction. For example, the permanent Commissioners are all qualified town planners, planning & development lawyers or architects and the part time Commissioners have expertise in areas including town planning, architecture, engineering, irrigation, water resources and native vegetation. The court is comprised of one District Court judge, one of whom is designated by proclamation as the Judge of the Youth Court, plus three specialist magistrates. All magistrates have been appointed to sit in the jurisdiction, as they are often required to deal with Youth Court matters in country regions.
